“But, first, remember, remember, remember…” C.S. Lewis
Remembrance.
I recently listened to reflections Christy Nockels shared on her podcast, The Glorious in the Mundane Podcast. (A little side note….follow this podcast and listen to it often. Let the rich truths discussed, sink in deep.)
Nockles points out that often in scripture, God calls us to a place of remembrance before He asks us to obey.
“Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.” Colossians 3:12-13 (HCSB)
Remember as God’s Holy and Loved…who we are. Holy. Loved. Remember.
Then respond and obey: Therefore put on heartfelt compassion. Kindness. Humility. Gentleness. Patience.
Remember you have been forgiven. Forgive.
”‘For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations…You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.'” Deuteronomy 7:6-9, 11 (ESV)
Oh how easily we forget who we are and what he has already done for us. He asks of us that we do the work of remembering…remembering that He has done the work for us and He loves us.
See this truth from Isaiah 26:12-13 “Lord, You will establish peace for us, for You have also done all our work for us. Yahweh our God, lords other than You have ruled over us, but we remember Your name alone.”
He has done all our work for us, already done. Finished.
Let us remember His name alone when anxiety rushes in and demands we bow. Remember His name alone. When our to-do list claims to be our master….may we remember that He has established Peace for us and we are His beloved.
